1.Festival are meant to celebrate important events.節(jié)日使用來慶祝一年中重要的時候的。
mean的用法歸納拓展:
1.mean to do 打算做或企圖做.... I didn't mean to hurt you.
2.mean doing 意味著做... Being a stuent means studying hard.
3.mean sb. to do sth.“打算讓某人做某事”,也可以用于被動語態(tài)中
I mean you to work as our spokesman.
4.be meant for;打算給與....;打算做...用
The magazine was meant for young girls.
5.What do/did you mean by...?你..是什么意思?
What do you mean by "education"?
聯(lián)想:
mean 單復(fù)數(shù)相同(以復(fù)數(shù)形式出現(xiàn)),方式,方法
by all means 可以,當(dāng)然行,沒問題
by means of sth.借助...手段,依靠....方法
by no means 決不,一點也不(如用于居首,應(yīng)部分倒裝)
典型例題:
(2006重慶,24)I've tried very hard to improve English.But by no means(D) with my progress.

此題的關(guān)鍵是詞組“by no means".當(dāng)否定副詞或詞組位于句首時,句子需倒裝。
2.What they celebrate and what people do
celebrate 可作為及物和不及物動詞,意為”慶祝“。
How did you celebrate May Day this year?
It's Dad's birthday today and we're going out for a meal to celebrate.
詞語辨析:
celebrate與congratulate都與喜事有關(guān),但后面接的賓語不同。
1)celebrate 表示”慶祝“,指以行動來慶祝生日、節(jié)日等
2)congratulate表示”祝賀“,指對個人經(jīng)過努力獲得成功的祝賀,后面只能接sb.常用
congratulate sb. on/upon sth./doing sth.口語中常用:congratulations
congratulate you on your promotion-----we must go out and celebrate.

That kind of question is very diffcult to answer.=Questions of that kind are diffcult to answer.

Practice (用動詞的適當(dāng)形式填空)
①Books of this kind (sell)[sell] well in the bookstore.

①句中謂語動詞的單復(fù)數(shù)由“books”確定。②句中的謂語動詞由“kind”確定。
4.Most ancient festival would celebrate the end of cold winter,planting in spring and harvest in autumn.大多數(shù)古老的節(jié)日總是慶祝嚴寒的結(jié)束,春季的播種和秋季的收獲。
would 用作情態(tài)動詞,表示過去經(jīng)常做某事,意為“總是,經(jīng)常,往往”等,有時可與used to互換,但would 只能與表動態(tài)的動詞連用。
When we worked in the same office,we would often have coffee together.
He used to have a green car but now he drives a black one.(不能用would)
5.At that time people starve if food wa diffvult to find...那時候如果食物難以找到,人們會挨餓...

1.vt.使餓死 vi.餓死(餓得要死)starve to death
Millions of people starved to death during the war.
2.某人渴望得到某物;缺乏
be starved of/starve for/be starved for:long for;be in great need of
The homeless children were starving for love.
The car was starved of petrol and wouldn't start.
3.感覺很餓(僅用于進行時)
When will the dinner be ready?I'm starving.

聯(lián)想:表示“渴望得到或做某事"的D短語:
be eager for sth/to do sth
be anxious for sth/to do sth

典型例題:

6.Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors.有些節(jié)日是為了紀念死者,或者使祖先得以滿足。
1.honour 1)光榮,榮譽(n)尊敬
They fight for the honour of the country.
One must show honour to one's parents.
2)in honour of 為了紀念
A festival is set in honour of the hero.
3)an hounour 光榮的人或事情
Liu Xiang is an honour to our country.

8.For the Japanese festival Obon,people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors.
[考點1]情態(tài)動詞should 在句中表示“應(yīng)該”。
